Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication. Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid. The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported. Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood. Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols. Police say early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely human blood. "There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added. City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details. A senior political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly. "This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
